This course deals with the visual arts in the German-speaking areas of the Holy Roman Empire and Switzerland, from the time of kaiser Karl IV until the deaths of Duerer and Gruenewald. The first part of the course deals with late gothic painters, including Theodorich of Prague, Master Bertram, Master Francke of Hamburg, Konrad Witz of Basel, Stephan Lochner of Cologne, and the Austrian Michael Pacher (who would have an Italian passport if he were alive today). Printmakers include Master ES, Martin Schongauer and the Housebook Master. Albrecht Duerer, who as painter, printmaker, and theoretician introduced the Renaissance to Germany, and Matthias "Gruenewald" (Gotthardt-Nithart), who served the archbishops of Mainz and the abbots of Isenheim, are treated during roughly the final third of the course. Reading knowledge of German is not required. |
