Special Topics in Art History: Advanced Work in Northern Art of the 15th-17th Centuries

This course will introduce upper level students to the unique resources, institutes and special techniques employed in the study of the visual arts of Northern Europe ca. 1400-1700. Topics will also include the changing reputations of such major artists as Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Dürer, Hieronymus Bosch, Hans Holbein, the Bruegel family, Rembrandt and Vermeer, from their own times to the present. There will be at least one paper required for this course.

Prerequisites: One intermediate level course in Northern painting and/or graphic art; OR reading knowledge of German or Dutch.
