Internships The Art History Office often receives notices for
internships and other employment, which we post on the departmental
"Jobs & Internships " bulletin board. The Elvehjem Museum
also has postings, near the office of Curator of Education Anne Lambert
(249 LVM). Ms. Lambert's office is an excellent resource for museum-related
opportunities, and should definitely be included in your job search. General | Midwest | West | East | Overseas Go Global! UW-Madison Global Studies' international careers website. Offers information and links of a general nature, but art history majors should check out their in-person international internship advising service (see website for days and times of their drop-in hours.) The Art Deadlines List is a monthly online newsletter listing deadlines for everything art-related, including internships, scholarships & grants. A free e-mail subscription is available. ArtTable Mentored Internships: one-on-one mentored summer (10-week) internships with ArtTable members in four chapters (New York, Washington, D.C., Northern and Southern California); stipend of $3,000 (2002). Aviso Employment Resources Online features listings from Aviso's renowned job bank for museum professionals (Aviso is the monthly newsletter of the American Association of Museums). Idealist.org is a searchable database of internships in many areas including the arts. Click on "Internships" under "Quick Links" and choose "Arts" for "Area of Focus." Rising Star Internships: has links to internships in Art History and the Arts, current and ongoing UW-Madison Student Job Center: search for internship and other opportunities (including work-study positions at the Elvehjem) UW Press: recently quite a few Art History majors have done internships with the Outreach Director. Madison Museum of Contemporary Art: employment page with occasional internships (not expected to offer much before Overture Center Phase II construction is complete...) Wisconsin State Historical Society: this page lists paid jobs, volunteering opportunities, and internships (currently only the archaeology internship is listed, but check for a cataloging internship in the future.) Hunt Internship Program and the Jayne and Dick Johnston Family Foundation Education Internship (both summer programs). East CoastPhiladelphia Museum of Art: information on their summer Museum Studies Internship Program; downloadable application Antenna Audio USA (New York City): Antenna Audio is the leading producer of audio tours for museums, galleries and heritage sites worldwide, and often has summer internships. This program offers a unique opportunity to work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, working in collaboration with the museum's curatorial and education departments to create interpretative audio tours for the museum's collection. Brooklyn Museum of Art: summer and 10-month internships (applications due March 31 each year.) Christie's (New York City): internships and job opportunities Dahesh Museum (New York City): summer internships (unpaid, though with stipend of an unlimited Metrocard.) Guggenheim Museum (New York City): offers a variety of academic year and summer internships for upper-level undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students who are studying arts administration, art history, conservation, education, film and media studies, museum studies, and other related fields. The Jewish Museum Internship Program (New York City): offers fall, spring and summer-long internships. Time commitments range from as little as 10 hours per week to virtually full-time, depending on the student's interests and department's needs. Internships are generally unpaid, but it may be possible to receive a transportation stipend and in some cases special funding is available. Magnum Photos (New York City) : photography agency and co-op for many famous journalistic photographers. Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City): ongoing internships, paid and volunteer. Includes a summer internship program at The Cloisters. Museum of the City of New York: unpaid internships in various departments may be available; students must be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program to be eligible. National Museum of Women in the Arts (New York City): three (fall, spring, summer) paid internships (full-time, 12-weeks, with a $1,500 stipend) as well as 10-12 month long unpaid internships. New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York City): ongoing internships in various departments Center for Photography at Woodstock (New York): ongoing internships National Museum of the American Indian - George Gustav Heye Center in New York City; Cultural Resources Center (CRC) in Suitland, MD; and the administrative offices in Washington, DC: Four 10-week internship sessions are offered at all locations throughout the year, in several departments. The Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC): summer and academic-year internships The Navy Museum: The Naval Historical Center offers internships to students who wish to have professional work experience in areas related to their educational programs and career goals. Curatorial, education, and design internships available throughout the year; small honoraria are possible. National Endowment for the Humanities (Washington, DC): 10-week summer internships, stipends of $4,000 (2002). Fellowship, a joint program of the Society of Architectural Historians
(SAH) and the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), permits an
architectural historian to work on a 12-week HABS project during the
summer. . Office of Fellowships and Grants - Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study (Washington, DC): contains an embarrassment of internship opportunites in every area of the Smithsonian imaginable.
