Barbara Mackey Kaerwer: The Ardor of an Expressionist Collector
Lecture by Dr. Barbara C. Buenger,
Professor Emerita of Art History, U.W.- Madison

Barbara C. Buenger was the Department of Art History’s specialist in European Modernism until her retirement in 2016.  An expert on German & Austrian art, and on Max Beckmann in particular, she collaborated with Barbara Mackey Kaerwer, students, and colleagues on numerous occasions to exhibit, research, discuss, and celebrate Barbara Kaerwer’s vast holdings of prints, decorative art, books, and other publications now in the Chazen Museum and Kohler Art Library collections.  Prof. Buenger will explore the discrimination and spirit with which Barbara Kaerwer tracked down, collected, and presented the vast scope and excitement of several of Central Europe’s most fertile modernist movements.

Thursday, Oct. 5th, 5:30 p.m. in the Chazen Museum Auditorium (opening reception for exhibition to follow)
