Welcome Letter

Dear Alumni and Friends:

The 2017-18 academic year promises to be an exciting one.  I am taking over this fall as Chair from my friend and colleague, Gene Phillips, who completed a three-year term. We are all grateful for his leadership, particularly during the budgetary challenges of recent years.

As the school year begins, there’s a new wave of energy on campus. The State budget picture appears to be improving for UW. The Chancellor has announced expanding our undergraduate enrollment, which should lead to fresh hires on campus. While we have yet to know what this means for the Department’s future, the mood on Bascom is decidedly more optimistic.

We also sense excitement in the Department this fall. We welcome seven new students from across the globe and whose research interests intersect with almost every member of the faculty. Classes at all levels are nearly full to capacity. We are continuing to offer students curatorial experience in exhibition classes, and we  are developing promising new introductory classes, including Religion and Art (Spring 2018) and History of the World in Ten Buildings (Fall 2018). We’re also looking to test exciting experimental courses in summer term. As we transform our curriculum to meet the needs of today’s student population, we will strive to bring our exemplary and award-winning research into the classroom.

We come to campus this fall knowing our field matters now more than ever. As the tragic events unfolded in Charlottesville in mid-August, sparking vigorous debate over the public display of confederate monuments, we were reminded of the power of art to embody and shape our everyday lives. As much as we aim to convey this in our scholarship and teaching, we also hope to host a series of lectures and events this year related to monuments and commemoration across the globe and across time. Please visit our website or check out our Facebook page @ UW-Madison Department of Art History.

We value your participation in the Department. I encourage you to reach out to me at any time. My phone number is 608-263-2340 and my email is avandrzejews@wisc.edu. We hope to see you soon at one of our events.

Warm regards,

Anna V. Andrzejewski
