Badger Talks Live: The Art of Papermaking

Mary Hark, Professor of Textile Design and Hand Papermaking at UW-Madison, is an artist who works collaboratively with Fine Press Book Designers designing and producing editions of handmade paper specific to particular book projects; she produces artworks, intended for exhibit that make use of her handmade papers and textiles; and she brings her hand papermaking practice to communities both in the US and in West Africa. Mary will explain the process of hand papermaking and share stories from her multifaceted creative practice.
Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Mary Hark received her Bachelor of Arts from the College of St. Benedict, her Master of Arts from the University of Iowa, and her Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her areas of interest include fiber and material studies; facilitating conversations between public school teachers and professional artists, designing meaningful arts integration practices across the curriculum; hand papermaking and indigo dye techniques; research on Ghanian textiles and the first handmade paper mill producing high-quality handmade papers using only local botanicals.
