This is an example of what Chinese netizens call “Versailles bragging,” which is a humblebrag that betrays your aristocratic lifestyle.

The Center for East Asian Studies presents a lecture on this trend, “Exploring the phenomenon of ‘Versailles’ bragging on Chinese social media,” by Xinren Chen, professor of linguistics, assistant dean of the School of Foreign Studies, and director of Institute of Foreign Linguistics at China’s Nanjing University.

Serving as moderator will be UW-Madison Chinese linguistics professor Weihua Zhu, Department of Asian Languages & Cultures.
