CREECA | Russia’s War against Ukraine & the Academic Landscape of Area Studies: A Graduate Student Forum

February 23 @ 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

Russia’s War against Ukraine and the Academic Landscape of Area Studies: A Graduate Student Forum

This event is open to students and faculty of UW–Madison ONLY.

Russia’s war against Ukraine has been changing the way we think of our civil and moral responsibility as educators and scholars. It has also changed the conditions under which we do research and conceive of the future of our fields. These issues are particularly urgent for graduate students who begin their research careers today. How has the war changed research agendas and research questions? What does it mean to be an academic expert on the region when the region is engulfed in war? Graduate student panelists will address these questions and others during the first part of our forum, after which the floor will be open to questions and comments from the audience.

Panelists:

August Brereton (History)

Özlem Eren (Art History)

Morgan Henson (Sociology)

Isabella Palange (Slavic)

Valeria Umanets (Political Science)

Moderated by Irina Shevelenko, Professor (Slavic) and Director of CREECA
