Lecture title:
“The PhD and Curatorial Work: Curating between Artists and Institutions, and Developing Long Arcs of Inquiry”
Bio:
Amy L. Powell is curator of modern and contemporary art at Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research engages contemporary art with a commitment to university art museums as sites for knowledge production and experimentation. Her work at KAM has included solo exhibitions and publications with artists Louise Fishman, Kennedy Browne, Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Autumn Knight, Zina Saro-Wiwa, and the group exhibitions Attachment and Time / Image. Previously Cynthia Woods Mitchell Curatorial Fellow at Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston, she organized projects with Zineb Sedira, Clarissa Tossin, Anna Campbell, and Antena (founded by poets/translators/interpreters/artists Jen Hofer and JD Pluecker). Her work has been supported by the Henry Luce Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution, and the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a Ph.D. in art history in 2012.
