Japanese Green Tea in Wisconsin and the Midwest
November 17, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

“Japanese Green Tea in Wisconsin and the Midwest in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries”
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the global trade in Japanese green tea tied the economies of Japan and the midwestern United States together, turning the Midwest into a major export market for Japanese green tea and creating an intimate trade relationship between the Midwest and Japan. Wake Forest historian Robert Hellyer’s talk will draw on his current research about this topic to demonstrate how this beverage from across the Pacific became a key commodity and crucial economic link in trade between East Asia, Wisconsin, and the rest of the Midwestern United States.
