Museum Talks at the Leiden Department of Art History: Museum Talk with Gary Schwartz: Rembrandt’s Orient: West Meets East in Dutch Art of the Seventeenth Century

Gary Schwartz and Arnoud Vrolijk

Thursday, October 14th, 2021 | 11:00am–12:00pm CT

Dutch artists were fascinated by Oriental motifs of all kinds, in still life, city views, histories, portraits, tronies. One particular orientalist genre, the tronie of a studio model with Oriental attributes, became associated with Rembrandt for generations to come. In 2020-21 the first exhibition devoted to the subject was held in Kunstmuseum Basel and Museum Barberini in Potsdam. The guest curator, Gary Schwartz, tells about the exhibition and its theme.

Arnoud Vrolijk, curator of Oriental Manuscripts at Leiden University Libraries, will briefly explain about the efforts of 17th-century Leiden scholars to understand the Orient and its culture(s).
