MMoCA | AMENDS Phase III
October 22, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Comedians often have a knack for revealing and discussing sometimes hard truths, and that’s why MMoCA invited local stand-up comedian Craig Smith to perform at the Museum’s community-forward art space, The Shop. Smith’s performance is part of the third and final phase of “AMENDS,” the interactive art exhibition by internationally renowned artists Nick Cave and Bob Faust. The ultimate goal of “AMENDS” is to eradicate racism, and while that’s no laughing matter, we hope that Smith’s performance will provide some comic relief as we reflect on the important actions needed in our communities to end racism.
Smith is a regular at the Comedy On State stand-up venue in Madison and is known for his part in the “Nobody Cares Podcast,” with fellow comedians Allie Lindsay and Nick Hart.
The “AMENDS” installation has been unveiled in three phases. In “Phase I: Letters to the World Toward the Eradication of Racism,” MMoCA invited select state and city community leaders to contribute a letter, quote, or a note that brought to light their roles in perpetuating racism. Those thoughts were written on The Shop windows, for all passersby to contemplate.
“Phase II: Dirty Laundry,” asked the public to identify the pieces of themselves that have contributed to holding our society back from genuine equality or equity. Hundreds of adults and children wrote their responses to the prompt on a yellow ribbon, which was tied to the AMENDS clothesline, now on view in The Shop.
“Phase III: Called to Action,” centers Black voices by inviting local creatives to address racism or respond directly to the words written on the ribbons hanging from the community clothesline.
