MMoCA: Live Q&A with Sebura&Gartelmann

September 25, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for a live studio visit and Q&A with Sebura&Gartelmann in tandem with their exhibition, “Bonded,” on view in MMoCA’s Imprint Gallery from June 6 through September 27, 2020.
Sebura&Gartelmann: Bonded features the video work of collaborative duo Jonas Sebura and Alex Gartelmann, whose practice challenges expressions of traditional masculinity by creating contemporary rituals that cultivate trust and express intimacy between the artists. The sometimes calamitous situations in which they place themselves highlight not only their vulnerability but also their care for each other, and operate as models for non-hierarchical interdependence. In this hour-long studio visit followed by a live Q&A, Sebura&Gartelmann will discuss themes key to their work, the process they have developed over their decade long collaboration, and how their practice has changed in response to the ongoing pandemic.

Sebura&Gartelmann is the Chicago based collaborative of Jonas Sebura and Alex Gartelmann started in 2010. Through acts that employ risk, pain, silence, and humor Sebura&Gartelmann expose trust, vulnerability, and intimacy in their relationship and collaboration. Featuring Pulley System, Peg Wall, Finger Sew, and Gum Chew, this exhibition highlights how the artists use their signature calamitous aesthetic to subvert traditional representations of masculinity.
