Museum of Wisconsin Art | Myself When I Am Real: A Teen Perspective on Identity
May 22, 2021 - June 13, 2021

“Identity” is a dense subject. It comprises the labels we hang on ourselves as well as those that culture has imprinted on us since birth. As with every generation, the teens of today are forging their own path: adopting new terminology and concepts, finding their own voice on social media, and becoming politically conscious and engaged. For Myself When I Am Real: A Teen Perspective on Identity, we asked twelve regional high schools to have students create art that addresses the theme of identity. In parallel with MOWA’s exhibition Artists without Borders, the teen artists express their unique take on the relationship between art, place, and character.
The exhibition features twenty-four works—two representatives each from the following twelve high schools selected by their respective art educators: Cedarburg High School, Étude High School, Hartford High School, Kohler High School, Menomonee Falls High School, Nicolet High School, Ozaukee High School, Pius XI Catholic High School, University School of Milwaukee, Veritas High School, West Bend East High School, and West Bend West High School.
