Join exhibition curator Edith Devaney and Waqas Wajahat, long-term advisor to the Milton Avery Trust, as they bring insight into the work and practice of one of the most important and influential 20th-century American artists, Milton Avery.

Influenced by American Impressionism and contributing to the development of the Abstract Expressionist movement, Milton Avery bridged these important art traditions whilst forging his own distinct artistic path. With his focus on simplified forms and exceptional use of colour, his paintings of landscapes, figures and still lifes, sought to express an idea in its simplest form.

As the RA hosts the first comprehensive exhibition of Avery’s work in Europe, exhibition curator Edith Devaney talks to art advisor, collector and long term advisor to the Milton Avery Trust, Waqas Wajahat, to explore how colour defined Avery’s compositions to earn him the reputation as one of North America’s greatest 20th-century colourists.
Edith Devaney is the Managing Director and Curator for David Hockney Inc. and the David Hockney Foundation. Formerly the modern and contemporary curator at the RA, her exhibitions included David Hockney: A Bigger Picture (2012), Abstract Expressionism (2016), and Jasper Johns: Something Resembling Truth (2017). She also curated RA’s Summer Exhibition for twenty years and has written extensively on art.
Waqas Wajahat is an art collector and advisor who built his practice with an emphasis on connoisseurship and philanthropy. For over twenty years, he has focused on curating exhibitions, advising museums, foundations, and artists’ estates including the Milton Avery Trust.
