The Hunterian | Limitations on Collections: Whistler, Wallace and Burrell

October 19, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Hunterian Director Steph Scholten discusses the limiting conditions on collections with a panel of art experts

About this event

Historical limitations on the use of museum collections: the ethics of change

The Hunterian at the University of Glasgow is home to a very large collection of materials from the artist James McNeil Whistler, donated by his sister-in-law in several instalments between 1935 and 1958. On a part of this donation limitations have been put in place that prevent the collections to travel of the university campus and, in some cases, even to be shown to the public. The current exhibition at The Hunterian ‘Whistler: Art and Legacy’ can therefore only be shown in Glasgow. Would it be desirable to change these limiting conditions? In this event, moderated by Hunterian director Steph Scholten, experts will discuss the practical and ethical challenges.
