UNPACKED: Refugee Baggage Keynote Lecture: Mohamad Hafez

March 6, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Syrian-born, Connecticut-based artist and architect Mohamad Hafez will lecture on his powerful project UNPACKED: Refugee Baggage that humanizes and describes the experiences of refugee families through sculpture and story. Scenes reconstructed within wall-mounted suitcases, these sculptures visually support the recorded stories of nine refugees, and the experiences that have carried with them during their journeys. The project will be on view in the Lynn Mecklenburg Textile Gallery along with objects from the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection.

Hafez’s presentation is the keynote for the international conference “Refugees in/from the Middle East,” hosted by the Middle East Studies Program from March 6:00–7:00, 2020. The talk is at 4:00pm on Friday, March 6th, followed by tours of the exhibition and a reception.
