UW–Madison Art Dept. | Fall 2021 Art Faculty Colloquium: Prof. Gerit Grimm
November 18, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm

Born and raised in Halle of the German Democratic Republic, Professor Gerit Grimm celebrates the rich history of the ceramic figurine in traditional art. Fairy tales, myths and fables dominate her wheel thrown sculpture as she pushes the boundaries of her creative process. The bronze-like color of the work is achieved entirely from the stoneware clay body and adds to the old world feel, inviting the viewer to reminisce about a simpler time.
Grimm’s work is represented in collections around the world including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, CA; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, NE; Jingdezhen Arts and Craft Museum Collection, Jingdezhen, China; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Kennedy Museum of Fine Art, Athens, Ohio; Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art, Alfred, New York; and School for Applied Art & Design Burg Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany.
Grimm earned her MA from the University of Michigan and her MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She has taught at CSULB, Pitzer College, Doane College and MSU Bozeman and has worked at major residencies like Mc Coll Center, Bemis Center, Kohler Arts & Industry Program and Archie Bray Foundation. Grimm is now an Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison. geritgrimm.com
