Wisconsin Historical Society | Finding Genealogical Collections: Everywhere and Anywhere

September 25, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

From mega-sites to local records, learn about using different types of genealogy resources in this engaging online webinar with the Wisconsin Historical Society.
The webinar is presented Lori Bessler, a Reference Librarian at the Society specializing in family and local history. She has lectured throughout the Midwest on genealogical topics such as organizing research, writing family history, and finding genealogical collections. Bessler has researched family history for over 40 years.
Topics include:
Mega sites and what to expect: Ancestry.comFamilySearch.orgMyHeritage.comFindMyPast.com and many other sites claim to have all you need for family history research. They all provide quite a bit, but do you really understand what they have and why? Online family trees, digital collections, databases, and other features can be difficult to navigate. You need to understand how to find their content in order to know what to expect and what not to expect from these mega sites.
Federal collections: The United States Federal Government has many documents that can tell you more about your ancestors. What are these collections? Where are these held? How can you access them? Which are online and which are not? Library of Congress and the National Archives are just two institutions that will be presented.
State and regional collections: State Libraries and State Archives hold many collections that can help you draw out the family stories. There are online catalogs to list their collections, but do you know how to get the most out of these catalogs? Have you found the digital treasures that are being created at the state level? There are regional repositories around the country that may hold even more collections! WorldCat.org, ArchiveGrid, Internet Archive, and other sites will be presented.
County and local collections: Local libraries, county courthouses, and historical societies have many resources that can help you put together more stories about your family. There are also other organizations within a county that may hold unique collections you will not find at the state or federal level. This presentation will help you set up a research plan that will organize your search at the county and local level.
