How to Apply to the Graduate Program

The Department of Art History at the University of Wisonsin-Madison offers two graduate options, a terminal Master's Degree and a Doctoral Program designed to meet the needs of the Ph.D. candidate. If you are committed to a Ph.D. in Art History, apply directly to the Ph.D. program. The deadline to apply to the Art History graduate program is December 15th.

Prospective Graduate Student Welcome Event

On Thursday, March 1st and on Friday, March 2nd (2018) the Department of Art History will be hosting its 6th annual Welcome Event for graduate students who have been admitted into the program. We strongly recommend that you join us as this is an unique opportunity to meet the Art History faculty and staff, as well as current Master’s and Doctoral students in the program! Time will be set aside for you to meet one-on-one with your prospective faculty advisor(s), and you will also have face-to-face time with current graduate students.

During your visit we will provide you with detailed information about the Art History graduate program. Most notably, we will go over departmental expectations, financial aid/funding processes & opportunities, and we will introduce you to resources available in our department and around campus. You will have the opportunity to tour The Chazen Museum of Art and the Kohler Art Library, both of which are located IN our building!

On Thursday evening (March 1st) at 5:30 PM you can look forward to a Welcome Reception where Art History faculty, staff and current graduate students will all be in attendance. For those of you who interested in museum work, you will have an opportunity to speak with Chazen Museum of Art staff as well! On Friday, March 2nd there will be a full day planned for you which will include tours of facilities, breakfast with faculty, dinner with current grad students, and much more! The following application materials are required by the Department:

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (Submitted online, additional information found here).
  • 1 original, official transcript from each institution attended (Mail directly to Art History Department).
  • GRE scores, and TOEFL if international (Submitted electronically, additional information found here).
  • Writing sample - Any length you choose, but not more than 20 pages (Mail writing sample directly to Art History Department. Please also upload this document in special section of Supplemental Application after submitting your regular online application).
  • Statement of reason/purpose (Mail statement of purpose directly to Art History Department. Please also be sure to upload this document in your main application and/or in the Supplemental Application).
