I study the role of monumental or public Christian art and architecture in the formation of individual and communal identities during late antiquity. Many art historical studies of this period focus on the development of Christian iconography while scholars of religion explore the political and social changes that impact the development of the Christian tradition. I argue that the construction and use of new religious structures played a critical role in this shifting religious landscape.
