Cortney’s primary research interest is the vernacular expressions of personal creativity through home adornment such as art environments, gardens and grottos.Though art-environment artists are often misunderstood as operating on the fringes of the art market and even society, their work clearly draws from a rich history of craft and art making in style, subject, and material. Their work enriches well known art historical topics - such as the formation and expression of an American identity - by answering the questions, “How does the works materiality, collection and application of everyday objects and industrial materials, introduce an important layer of personal and cultural meaning?” and “How can their work enrich scholarship on gendered labor practices in craft and art making?”
