Lecture | The End of Art?

This event has passed.

Hagen Room | Conrad A. Elvehjem Building, Rm. #150
@ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Stephen Houlgate (Professor of Philosophy, University of Warwick), will deliver deliver a talk on “Hegel, Danto, and the End of Art” in the Elvehjem Building’s Hagen Room at 5:30pm on April 4. Prof. Houlgate is an internationally recognized expert on the German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel (1770 – 1831), who controversially asserted that “art, considered in its highest vocation, is and remains for us a thing of the past.” Is the golden age of art really over? And what happens after that? In his talk, Prof. Houlgate will discuss Hegel’s so-called “end of art” thesis in relation to the work of Arthur Danto (1924 – 2013), an American philosopher who, no less controversially, asserted that “art” in its classical sense came to an end in the 1960s.
