Exhibition Tour by Melanie Herzog (Ph.D., 1995) on William Villalongo: Myths and Migrations

From Picasso to George Clinton’s P-Funk, William Villalongo’s artworks contain imagery and allusions from various genres, underscoring the erasure of the Black culture and its layered past throughout the millennia. Join art historian Melanie Herzog for a tour of William Villalongo: Myths and Migrations as she explores these connections, adding context to the work on view.

Melanie Herzog is a Professor Emerita of Art History at Edgewood College. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has taught recently in the Department of African American Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She holds an M.F.A. in ceramics and a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. With an emphasis on artists’ encounters across cultural and geographical borders, socially engaged artistic practice, and intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, and representation, she teaches, publishes, and lectures widely on North American art and visual culture, particularly African American art, and art and visual culture of the African diaspora.
