International Women’s Day: An Energetic Breaker of Glass Ceilings

This International Women’s Day, Art History remembers Professor Emerita Jane Hutchison. See her interview for Marquis Who’s Who, where she shares that due to her gender she was qualified yet not eligible to receive her Ph.D. at any Ivy League School — and why choosing UW–Madison turned out very much in her favor. She received her Ph.D. and joined our faculty in 1964; she researched and taught a remarkable 48 years before passing in 2020. As she shaped her career as a renowned art historian, she also shaped the careers of several generations of future art historians. Even at the Elvehjem-adjacent University Club, “She had to claw her way into membership, yet later rose to be the club’s president.”
