Gabriel Chazan (Ph.D. Student) co-organized the event “Ancestors and the Archive” with The Magnum Foundation’s Counter-Histories Initiative, a virtual panel discussion about the ethics and future of institutional archives in light of ongoing decolonization debates. Bringing together academics, activists, and archivists, this event explores how archives magnetize competing interests, capture possibilities, and limit political imagination, as well as how they might be read against the grain. What is an archive? What should an archive be? This event took place on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022. Speakers included: Gil Hochberg, Ransford professor of Hebrew and Visual Studies, Comparative Literature, and Middle East Studies at Columbia University Monica Huerta, assistant professor of English and American Studies at Princeton University Zakiya Collier, professional archivist and memory worker Nicholas Mirzoeff (moderator), visual activist and professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University
