Congratulations to PhD Student Travis Olson for being awarded the 2020 HABS/SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellow for the National Park Service’s Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP)! Since the HDP office is still on an all-telework schedule due to COVID-19, Travis will work remotely on a context study for Philadelphia’s early 20th century purpose-built recreation centers, focusing on over a dozen centers built between 1911 and 1928. Travis’ report will explore the history and geography of children’s play spaces in the city of Philadelphia beginning with the efforts of the reform movements in the Progressive Era through the twentieth century.
