Department Project: Finding Slavery at the Chazen Museum

Website Launch! In response to calls for social justice in the summer of 2020, Prof. Ann Smart Martin’s Fall AH 601: Museum Studies class searched the collections of The Chazen Museum of Art to locate and interpret objects related to the enslavement of Black people in the Americas. They discovered how historical art objects contain hidden stories of slavery and how museums as institutions enable racism. The class created a virtual exhibition Finding Slavery in a Campus Art Museum: Past and Present.
