Description: This course explores transformations in art and visual culture across Europe and its colonies from approximately 1550 to 1750. The Baroque has been characterized by distinctive stylistic shifts from the Renaissance and marked responses to dynamic changes in politics, religion, society, and economics. With a global perspective, we will discuss the intricate interplay of these shifts through global trade, colonialism, exploitation of natural resources, and enslavement of human labor. Each lecture will feature case studies that provoke continuous inquiry into how works of art reflected and reshaped ways in which early modern people perceived themselves within their rapidly expanding world.
