Description: This class focuses on the depiction of monsters and monstrosities which terrorize the silver screen. In addition to being exposed to a wide breath of films, students will learn and critically apply the principles of “Monster Theory.” Furthermore, this class would be particularly interested in the translation of text into image. Thus, Bram Stoker’s Dracula or Clive Barker’s Hellbound Heart would be potential readings for discussion alongside the cinematic text. Films could include Murnau’s Nosferatu, James Whale’s Frankenstein, Kaiju films, Harryhausen productions, extraterrestrial beings, and contemporary creature-horror.
